Description

  • soapstone
finely carved standing dressed in a loose robe cascading in ample folds and delicately engraved with foliate scrolls, holding in her arms an infant clutching a lotus, her plump face detailed with fine features set in a benevolent expression, her hair tied up in a high chignon and covered with a veil, the stand modelled as a pierced rock

Provenance

Strong National Museum of Play, Rochester, NY (ref. 75.1340).

Condition

There are a few expected nicks along the edge of the carving, especially to the lower edge of the robe. There are chips to the tip-end of her right foot's toes. There are a few further occasional bruises to the extremities or expected surface wear here and there to the figure and the base but overall the sculpture is in good condition. The figure is drilled on the underside to fit on two screw-pegs on the rock base.
