Description

  • bamboo
of cylindrical section and supported on three short feet, well carved and reticulated with a continuous scene depicting scholars engaged in various pursuits with attendants by their sides, one scholar serenely seated at a table practicing calligraphy, surrounded by several figures looking intently at him, two scholars conversing with each other, another holding a brush up against a jagged rockwork, the rural setting arboured with gnarled pine and wutong trees, incised with the two characters Fan Bin on one rock

Condition

The brushpot is in overall good condition. There are expected age cracks running vertically from the mouthrim and foot including an opening crack measuring approx. 6 cm. running from the rim extending to the reticulated area. There are also small nicks to the extremities and edges of the carving, including the outer and inner mouthrim and the brush held by one scholar. The surface is somewhat soiled and rather dry as showing on the illustration in the catalogue.
