Description

the jar of globular form with a short flared neck and everted rim, supported on a solid splayed foot, applied with a white slip and a milky-white glaze stopping above the base revealing a white body, the interior glazed dark brown, the teabowl of conical form supported on a solid foot and shallow footring, applied with a lustrous black glaze mottled with russet streaks drizzling down from the rim, pooling in thick tear-drops around the foot revealing a dark reddish-brown body, the rim left unglazed and dressed in a brown wash

Sotheby's Hong Kong, 23rd May 1978, lot 4 (jar).

Condition

The jar is in good overall condition. There is some expected wear and light scratches to the surface glaze. There are two firing cracks and a small flake to the unglazed foot, consistent with this type of ware, together with expected minor imperfections in the glaze including pinholes or small gaps. The 'Jian' bowl is in overall good condition with only a few light scratches to the surface glaze.
