Condition

Appears to be cut and joined together, particularly at lower end. Pile ranges from near original 1/5in. with areas of foldwear low to knotheads and spot foundation. Rewoven areas and repiling scattered throughout; very well executed and only visible on reverse. Upper end with original flatwoven end finish lower end with remnants of original finish and now secured with a binding stitch. Upper end with Velcro strips sewn on reverse. Sides partially extant. Very flexible handle, loose wave, good color. Restored and ready for use.

Catalogue Note

The dotted field design of the present carpet emulates an ancient tie-dyed pattern found on Tibetan textiles know as "P'u-lo," see Bidder, Hans, Carpets from Eastern Turkestan, Tubingen, 1979, p. 95, fig. 46. A similar carpet is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, see Dimand, M.S. and Jean Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig. 308, p. 330, another with Moshe Tabibnia, Intrecci Cinesi, Milan 2011, pl. 39, and another published, Herrmann, Eberhart, Seltene Orientteppiche VII, Munich, 1985, pl. 88.
