Catalogue Note
The remarkable condition of the present lot shows its great color and balanced design much as when it was originally conceived. Here, the dark browns have oxidized to create a relief effect in the border, and to cause the outlines in the field design to almost entirely recede. The overall stylized blossom design is in the repertoire of East Caucasian weaving with a similar rug in the Jim Burns collection, see James D. Burns, The Caucasus; Traditions in Weaving, Seattle 1987, pl. 17. For related examples of that have sold at auction, see Sotheby's New York, 5 December 1987, lot 90; Rippon Boswell, 15 May 1993, lot 61. Other East Caucasian rugs in comparable condition that have sold include a Seychour rug from the Estate of William Coury, Sotheby's New York, 11 June 2008, lot 76 (previously sold in these rooms 10 April 1997, lot 65 and subesquently published E. Herrmann, Kaukasische Teppichekunst im 19 Jahrhundert, Munich, 1993, pl. 15) and a Lesghi rug from the collection of Berji Andonian, sold Sotheby's New York, 19 May 2011, lot 58.
