Catalogue Note

In 1986, Bernard and Annabel Buffet buy the estate of La Baume in Provence (South of France). This house, the last one for Bernard Buffet, inspires him and becomes the subject of a new series of works. As Annabel recalls it, "Bernard had decided to turn it into landscapes and interior paintings, like a thorough portrait of someone you love... He wanted to retain its atmosphere and beauty, maybe in order to explain the love he was feeling for it. A love you can feel in each of his paintings. Extremely sensitive, Bernard had found in this exceptional place a shelter where he could hide far away from a society that hurt him. There he could go back to his passion for painting, his appetite for a quiet life and moreover he could go back to his quest for serenity."
Annabel Buffet quoted in the exhibition catalogue La Maison, Galerie Maurice Garnier, February –March 1998
