Catalogue Note

There are many ways to define abstraction and to create an abstract work. Interesting parallels can be drawn, however, between artists who employ a lyrical use of the paintbrush to create dynamic compositions.  Using grand gestures or small signs, T’ang Haywen, Chu the Chun, Zao Wou-Ki, Henri Michaux, Chao Chung-Hsiang Sam Francis and George Mathieu all create a new language. Scrawls, music notes, flowers, flames, wind and whisper, anything can be seen in their works. But in a post-Tower of Babel world, all illustrate a common language for the humanity to understand.
