Catalogue Note
An interesting archive offering insight into Norman Rockwell's working methods. In the 1960's and 70's, Geoffrey Priestly, Vice President and Merchandising Manager of Top Value Enterprises, Inc., and a collector of the artist's work, commissioned Rockwell to do a series of illustrations for the company's trading stamp catalogues. The Rockwell/Priestley collaboration was a close one. The artist shared his ideas for images and the executive offered his suggestions. All clothing and other merchandise depicted in the images was drawn from the current Top Value catalogue. The clothes and other items were sent to Rockwell, who used them to create tableaux with his models. These were photographed and photographs, pencil sketches and letters went back and forth before the final image was arrived at.
In addition to the four drawings, the archive includes 11 Autograph Letters and 9 typed letters to Priestly, all signed ("Norman" or "N"). There is a small collection of photographs, including one posed scene with models, and photos of Rockwell at work on the paintings in his studio. There are also photographic negatives, Top Value catalogues with Rockwell covers, and 2 Rockwell monographs inscribed to Priestley.
