Matisse, Henri

After a trip to Moscow where he met with his Russian patrons, Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov. He arrived in Tangiers on January 29, 1912. He took a room at the Hotel de France, the famous Room n°38. 
From Moscow, Morozov commissioned two landscapes from him: "Mon travail va bien - le premier paysage de Morosoff qui est terminé et cloué à mon mur comme je te l'ai dit est décidement bien - c'est une chose faite je puis donc t'en faire un croquis. (...) Le second paysage je le travaille tous les matins, c'est une porte de la Casbah. Je l'ai attaqué plus longuement hier. Il était très joli jusqu'ici mais pas assez dense". On the side, Matisse drew the sketch of Widow in Tangiers (formerly in the Ivan Morozov collection, today at the Pushkin Museum).
Shchukin commissioned 6 canvases. The collector had a clear preference for figure paintings but Matisse had trouble finding models in a Muslim country. His guide, Amido, could not find him a proper model: "Il devait m'amener une jeune [Africaine] mais est arrivé avec une vieille (...) de plus de 40 ans". He is looking for a young Moroccan woman, but he had to go in the Casbah to paint, and the conditions were awful: "J'ai trouvé une femme arabe mais il faut aller travailler sur une terrasse (...) qui pue les cabinets d'une maniere suffocante."

He tried, via Amido, to negotiate with an African woman he saw in the casbah: "la premiere fois (...) je lui ai fait offrir par Hamido, 1 douro pour poser une heure habillée (...) j'ai monté (...) jusqu'à 4 douro, elle a encore refusée".
