Catalogue Note

First edition, first issue  of one of the most important books of the 19th century and Flaubert's masterwork.

While Madame Bovary was widely acclaimed by his contemporaries, Flaubert and his publisher were brought to court and charged with immorality - as was Baudelaire for Fleurs du Mal the same year.  Flaubert's trial ended in an acquittal.
