  • gouache on paper
Original gouache and ink drawing on board, signed "Bemelmans" and captioned by him in black ink, (19 x 23 3/4 in.; 483 x 603mm), c. 1960–61, with inked oval stamp in the lower margin reading "Bemelmans / Madeline".  Glazed and framed (not examined out of frame).

A charming garden scene from the fifth book in Bemelmans' Madeline series.  In this illustration Pepito, his mother, and the gardener pick flowers in the grounds of the Spanish Embassy in London, in anticipation of the arrival of Miss Clavel, Madeline, and the other girls from the school in Paris.
