Catalogue Note

Washington receives news of Shay's Rebellion.

Retired to Mount Vernon where he hoped to remain, until he was persuaded to attend the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Washington writes to Jeremiah Wadsworth (1743-1804), former Commissary General, having received reports of the defeat of Shay's Rebellion:

"I thank you kindly for sending me the enclosed - The Post of this day brought letters from Gen[era]l Knox to me containing similar information of yours. - The Gentleman at whose house I am (Mr Fendal) presents his compliments to you, and desires me to add, that he should be exceedingly happy to see you at it. I am as you may believe D[ea]r Sir Your Most Obedient Servant"

Mr. and Mrs. Washington, on 20 February 1787, had dinner at the home of Philip Richard Fendall in Alexandria, according to the entry for this "Letter not found" in Papers (5:44).
