8vo (9 1/4 x 5 3/4 in.; 235 x 146 mm). Six folding engraved maps hand-colored in outline; all maps linen-backed, tears at the folds, foxing and spotting. Nineteenth-century half red morocco; rubbed.

Catalogue Note

First edition. Called the "holster atlas" because it was advertised by its publisher as "a portable atlas ... calculated in its bulk and price to suit the pockets of officers of all ranks," The American Military Pocket Atlas had a scale too small to be of military use, which perhaps explains why many copies survive. The six maps in the Atlas comprise "North America" and "The West Indies" by Samuel Dunn; "The Northern British Colonies" by Samuel Holland and Thomas Pownall; "The Middle British Colonies" after Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson, and Lewis Evans; "The Southern British Colonies" after William de Brahm, Henry Mouzon, John Collett, and Bernard Romans; and "Lake Champlain, including Lake George" by William Brassier.
