Catalogue Note

Built at Haddam, Connecticut, in 1805, the ship Abula sailed out of New York as a neutral trader. John Martin Baker, the American consul in Palma, Mallorca, writing to Madison on the 12 May 1806, mentions the arrival of the Abula (30 April) and other ships which were immediately quarantined due to an outdated general order by the King of Spain, with the resulting "injury and oppression to our commerce."
