En 1884, Mallarmé avait remarqué avec intérêt la toute nouvelle revue mensuelle de Maurice Barrès, Les Taches d'encre. Barrès, quant à lui, après avoir admiré Mallarmé va le comprendre de moins en moins : "On peut se demander pourquoi une certaine partie raffinée du public se plaît à admirer des gens sans modestie, incapables de se soumettre simplement à l'influence d'une belle oeuvre, embarrassés par leur amour-propre dans l'instant même où ils lisent, et qui veulent collaborer avec leurs lectures" (Maurice Barrès, Mes cahiers, IX, Plon, 1929-1957, p. 330).
