Mallarmé, séduit par l'inventivité de Jarry, lui écrit de Valvins en septembre 1897 : "Ma surprise devant cette imagerie merveilleuse et exacte fut complète : les tons sont posés, vifs et frais, puis tout se transpose infiniment dans le rêve. Une géométrie de phrases, droites ou courbes, elle toujours nette, invente une langue définitive ou littéraire stricte, qui m'a charmé" (Correspondance, IX, p. 263).
