Thence by descent to Prince Clemens of Bavaria (1902 – 1990), Munich;
Purchased by the present owner in the 1980s.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There is a pattern of stable hairline craquelure on the paint surface, a small spot of paint flaking in the upper left corner covered by the frame, and two vertical patterns of very small spots of paint rubbing, both circa 3 cm from the left and right edge of the canvas, which are probably due to the inner slip of the frame. Ultra-violet light reveals a small sign of retouching in the white pigments toward the lower right corner and other minor scattered spots. The picture is in otherwise good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Charlotte Baronin von Oven, née von Hagn, was a successful Bavarian actress. She had an affair with Franz Liszt, who was inspired by her to write Was Liebe sei. She was rumoured to have been a mistress of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, who commissioned the present work from Stieler as well as an earlier work of 1828, which hung in the King's Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace. Charlotte married Alexander von Oven in 1848, however the couple divorced three years later.
