Description

  • A Marble Figure of a Togatus, Roman Imperial, circa 2nd Century A.D., with circa 18th Century Restorations

the youth standing with the weight on his left leg and wearing sandals, one remaining, and toga falling in long folds over the right knee and held in his right hand, a scroll box at his feet; the modern marble head carved as a portrait reminiscent of the emperor Augustus, the marble left hand holding the scroll also restored in marble. 

 

Condition

Front of base broken off. Left hand with scroll restored; head and neck also restored, in what appears to be a likeness of Augustus. Surface highly weathered, chipped, abraded, and encrusted. The back appears to have been originally heavily encrusted, then stripped and repolished in the process. The scroll box stencilled in black with the number '5233'.
