Catalogue Note
Born in 1810, Johann Anton Castell trained at the Dresden Academy under Johann Christian Dahl (1788-1857). Along with Caspar David Friedrich (1774 - 1840), Dahl became of the leading artists of the city and a point of reference for any artist who wanted to take up landscape painting. The present work is a view of the Albrechtsburg Castel. Located on the Elbe river only a few kilometres from Dresden, it was first built as a fortress in 929 by King Henry I of Germany.
