Description

  • Bust of a Faun
  • reddish brown marble, the eyes inlaid with mother of pearl, on a white marble socle
  • Italian or French, circa 1900

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, including dust in the crevices. There is naturally occurring veining to the marble, including to the nose and chest. There are a few minor stable hairline fissures due to veining, notably around the tip of the nose and the mouth. A section at the truncation on the proper right side and a section on the proper left side may have been carved separately, and there is a chip at the bottom of the section on the right side. There are several further chips around the edge of the truncation. There is some wear to the paint forming the pupils and irises. The white marble socle is in good condition with some dirt and wear.
