Description

  • Putto playing the lute
  • polychromed terracotta, on a later cloth-covered wood and perspex stand
  • Italian, 16th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the terracotta is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is wear to the polychromy, including flaking. Some of the polychromy, such as in the face, and the green at the putto's proper right side, may possibly have been refreshed. There is lacuna to the putto's abdomen on the proper left side, and another to the top of his head on the proper left side. There are a few losses, notably to the putto's penis and a possible loss to the top of the lute, where there is a hole. There is a hole to the putto's proper left shoulder. There are several cavities to the putto's back, the back of his proper left arm, and the back of his proper left thigh, consistent with the firing process. The modelling is flattened in these areas. The putto is attached to the stand with a screw in the proper left buttock. The modern stand is in good condition with some dirt wear to the fabric and the perspex. There is a label to the back of the base inscribed: 2051522
