Description
- Four profile reliefs of classical figures
- marble
- South German, 18th century
each stamped: 5788 to the socle and two with remnants of an old collection label
Condition
Overall the condition of the marbles is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a greyish layer to the surfaces throughout. There are several chips and losses around the edges, notably a larger loss to the top edge of one of the reliefs with a moustached man. This larger loss and several others are grey in colour, but there are also a few fresher chips, notably to the top edge of one of the bearded men, which reveal the white marble underneath. There are also a few minor abrasions to the reliefs, including to one of the bearded men's ears. The reliefs are carved separately from the socles and are attached to them with plaster, which is visible in places. There are remnants or ghostings of an old collection label to each of the reliefs at the bottom. There are a few scattered splashes of white and black paint, in particular to the reliefs with the moustached men. There are chips and abrasions to the edges of the socles, with larger losses to their backs, in particular to the socle of one of the reliefs with the moustached men, where there is also some orange-coloured dirt. There is a whitish stain running down one of the moustached men's cheek. Three of the reliefs are smooth at the back, while one is roughly hewn.
