Description

  • Sándor Brodszky
  • Old Mill in Waldbach, Austria
  • signed, inscribed and dated lower right: Brodazky. München 1861
  • oil on canvas
  • 45 by 64.5 cm.; 17¾ by 25½ in.

Provenance

George Schäfer (1896 - 1975), Schweinfurt;
His sale, Munich, Neumeister Kunstauktionen, 25 February 2005, lot 238;
Purchased at the above by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been lined. There is a pattern of hairline craquelure on the painted surface, which seems stable. There is minor rubbing along the framing edges, two small spots of flaking to the centre and right corner along the lower edge, and a minor vertical line in the trees above the right bank of the river which could address repairing. Ultra-violet light reveals some retouching in the aforementioned area above the river bank, other minor scattered spots, and areas of the sky which fluoresce quite opaquely possibly attributed to old cleaning. The picture is in otherwise good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
