Description

  • German School, 19th century
  • Portrait of a young lady
  • oil on canvas
  • 60.5 by 49.5 cm.; 23½ by 19½ in.

Provenance

Karl Lagerfeld (b. 1933), Paris;
His sale ('The Lagerfeld Collection'), New York, Christie's, 23 May 2000, lot 105 (one of a pair);
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are darker hues of colour along the four edges which could possibly be associated to discoloured varnish. Ultra-violet light reveals some minor spots of retouching in the girl's nose on the right nostril and on her neck, and other scattered spots in the unfinished area of the painted surface. Although unfinished, the picture is in otherwise good condition. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
