Literature

Possibly F. von Boetticher, Malerwerke des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, vol. II.2, Minden 1974, p. 687. no. 34 (where titled Bacchus, dem eine Nymphe Wein kredenzt).

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are some minor surface abrasions along the right and left framing edge with signs of an old tacking edge. Fine craquelure is visible notably tot he centre of the composition. Ultra-violet light reveals uneven fluorescence due to old residual varnish and quite extended areas of retouching notably in the Bacchus, in the flesh tones of the girl to the left, in the figures in the background and other scattered spots throughout the composition. There is some thinning to the canvas in the lower right corner which suggests previous cleaning. The work is ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
