Description
- Jan Looten
- A mountainous landscape with shepherds and huntsmen
- with traces of a signature, lower left
- oil on canvas
- 139 cm by 184 cm
Condition
The canvas has been relined and recently cleaned and varnished. The painting is in overall fair condition and it will not require any further attention. There is evidence of wear in the darker pigments of the foreground and ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the canvas grain in these same areas. Ultraviolet light also reveals strengthening in the foliage, in-painting of the craquelure in the sky, centre, and some larger patches of restoration to the left of the trees, along the upper and left margins, above the rocky outcrop on the left, and beside the trees, upper right. A G-shaped tear, approx. 20 cm. from the right-hand margin has also been repaired.
