Description

  • Three two-sided capitals
  • Verona marble
  • North Italian, 16th century

Condition

Given their placement outdoors, the condition of the capitals is good overall. There is a dark layer of dirt to the surfaces in most areas, in particular to two of the capitals. There is further dirt throughout, including splashes of white paint and also some red paint to one of the capitals. There is some weathering to the surfaces, and there are several stable fissures to the stone, consistent with the material. There are several chips and abrasions, which expose the natural red colour of the stone, notably around the edges and corners, and the high points of the carvings. There are also losses to some of the corners. Two of the capitals are partially hollowed out at the back. On one capital there is a metal mount which slides into a hole at the top.
