Catalogue Note

Lu Chuntao studied art at the Shanghai International Studies University from 1984 to 1986, and is currently vice principal of the Shanghai Calligraphy and Painting Academy and executive director of Shanghai Artist Association. In his paintings, Lu fully engages in xieyi (freehand) brushwork to depict works that allude to Chinese painting motifs and Western composition perspectives. In Egrets in Autumn, a glowing sun sets a lotus pond as light dances off the autumn coloured trees. Often in his depictions of natural scenes, Lu seeks to enliven the senses where aromas arise from the paper and light derive from brightly contrasted colours.
