Description

  • silk and metal-thread
both of long dress form, one with short sleeves, embroidered throughout with pink, white, green, yellow, blue and gilt metallic threads with batches of grapes and a floral composition on a light green silk ground, the collar and edges with scrolling relief decoration, small hidden metallic hooks to back for securing; the grey-blue silk kaftan with gilt appliqué foliate designs and bands of folded cloth

Condition

The blue silk dress relined on underside with some patches visible through old tears, some scuffs to surface, interior with while linen, reverse with minor green staining on gilt-metal threads. The green silk dress with some scattered fraying to embroidered threads, some minor losses to these threads, as viewed.

The green dress with short sleeves was probably put together in the first half of the twentieth century, using an older embroidered, appliqué and metal-thread textile (circa 1800), demonstrating the continued appreciation for luxurious Ottoman embroidered textiles.
