Catalogue Note

This intriguing incense burner takes inspiration from architectural models, notably Ottoman mosque designs in which the fountain court comprises a fountain at the centre of a domed, arched setting (echoed in the present model by the shape of the chalice used to hold incense, and the arched panels around it). For comparable examples, see the Selimiye Cami in Edirne, the Yakup Bey Zaviye in Kutahya (Goodwin 1987, p.265, p.74), and the the Ulucami in Bursa (Kuban 2010, p.135).
