Catalogue Note

inscriptions

Under the base:
'Its owner Aqa Mahmud Ibn Shahi'

The spherical shape of this jug, resting on a ring-foot, is archetypal of copper work of this type from the late Timurid/early Ottoman period. Aqa Mahmud is most probably the son of the poet Aqa Malik Sabzavari, pen-named Shahi (d.1453) who worked as a poet and calligrapher at the court of the Timurid Prince Baysunghur in Herat. See Melikian Chirvani 1982, pp.231-59, and p.267 for a similar jug.
