Catalogue Note
Decorated with bright red and green enamelled floral stems rendered with a natural vitality, the present bowl is evocative of the skill and creativity of Indian jewellers working with enamels. Originally introduced into India by European jewellers, the enamel technique was quickly taken up by local craftsmen, spreading throughout the Subcontinent in the sixteenth/seventeenth century. A beautiful, comparable, hand-mirror composed of nephrite set with colourful, transparent enamels is in the Khalili collection, London, inv.no.JLY 1068. For further examples with a similar enamel design, see Keene 2001, Moscow 2014, and Jaffer 2013).
