Catalogue Note

Belt fittings such as the present examples could have held a number of purposes, notably on the saddle girth, bridle or harness of a horse as well as to attach a sword or sabre to the belt of its wearer. Composed of gilt-bronze with floral bouquets inspired by Far Eastern motifs, these belt fittings would have been used by a person of rank. Two plaques, also composed of gilt-bronze worked in repoussé, are in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art (inv. JLY 503), and for similar belt fittings, see L. Komaroff and S. Carboni (ed.) 2002, pp. 66-67, nos.143, 150, 151, and p.195, no.152.
