Description

  • Ebony, oak, brassd, steel
  • 36.5cm.; 14¼in. high
6¼-inch dial with winged cherub spandrels, matted centre with engraved date aperture and ringed winding hole, the movement with six knopped and ringed latched pillars, verge escapement with later pivoted rear cock and silk suspension, pull quarter repeat striking on three bells, the backplate engraved with tulips and foliate scrolls and signed Henry Jones in the Temple, the case with gilt carrying handle to the finely pierced and repouseé gilt basket top, flambeau finials, repouseé door and side mounts, on a moulded base with brass bun feet

Condition

Dial is rather dirty and would benefit from re-silvering to the chapter ring, good original hands. Movement is complete and has conversion to backcock but otherwise appears to retain the original wheelwork throughout, very dirty and needs clean, service and overhaul. Case mounts are very dirty, one left side mount detached but we have it, old minor cracks to veneers and old repaired crack to base. With pendulum and winder/case key.

Catalogue Note

Henry Jones, (c.1642-1695), was a fine and prolific clockmaker. He was apprenticed in 1654 and Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1663. He was Master of the Company in 1691. He died in November 1695 and is buried in St Dunston's in the West, Fleet Street, London.
