Catalogue Note

The arms are those of Best impaling Knapp for William Draper Best (1767-1845), an eminent English lawyer and sometime judge of the Court of Common Pleas, who was knighted in 1824 and elevated to the peerage as Baron Wynford in 1829. He married in 1794 Mary Ann (1768-1840), second daughter of Jerome Knapp, Clerk to the Haberdashers' Company, by whom he had four sons and two daughters.

The inscription reads: ‘Gulielmo Draper Best, Servienti ad Legem, Ordinisque Senatoru Viro; Qui Fidus Ecelesiæ, Anglieanæ Alumnus, cum Annui Redilus Sacerdotiorum Londinensium, Antiquo Senatus Consulto definiti, mutatis temporibus, ad Vitæusus necessaries jam parum sufficerent, A.D. 1804 de Reditibus istis augendis Legem rogavit, suasit, pertulit, Argenteum quodinspicis Vasculum Sacerdotes quorumintererat D.DD. seilicet ut Grati ob hæc Merita Animi Perpetuum, qualecunqe esset Monimentum.’
