Description

  • A gold and pinchbeck necessaire cum watch, the movement signed Robert Sellers, London, circa 1755-1760 and later
  • gold, enamel, glass
  • 15.5 cm., 6 1/8 in. high
of upright rectangular form, cast with shepherds, shepherdesses and their animals within scrollwork and flowers, the lid with white enamelled border inscribed in gold: ' l'espoir de ta fidélité / fait ma / seule félicité' [the hope of your fidelity is my sole happiness], surmounted by the timepiece with white enamel dial and verge watch movement, signed Robt Sellers/ London and numbered 1231, on four scrolling supports, later mirror-lined lid, the silk-lined interior containing ten contemporary and later gold and steel implements including two glass scent flasks and a gold-mounted enamel mirror

Condition

charming object, nice chasing despite some wear to highlights inlcuding a pin head hole to front panel, some repair to feet, a few pins missing to hinge, lid does not close properly, wear and scratches to enamel border, the scroll legs supporting the timepiece with split and gold missing. the steel implements are rusting, new spoon, haircracks to enamel mirror, one glass scent flask with restuck chip to shoulder, gold implements with later French control mark.

An almost identical gold necessaire cum watch is in the Rijksmuseum (obejct number BK-17167). Another necessaire of similar construction but with pointed lid and no watch movement was sold, the property of Mrs Walter Buhl Ford II, Sotheby's New York, 15 June 1982, lot 328.
