A mahogany longcase regulator, James Condliff, Liverpool, circa 1840

12-inch dial with outer minute ring enclosing seconds dial with astronomers markings and hours dial, signed James Condliff, Liverpool, the substantial movement with five ringed and screwed pillars, high count train with six spoke wheels, deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets, beat adjustment on the crutch, maintaining power, counter balance to centre arbor, adjustable end stops to all available pivots, the whole enclosed with brass dust shutters secured by thumb screws, the mercury pendulum with oval glass jar and roller suspension pendant from an adjustable block fitted to the backboard, the case with flat top mounded cornice above canted corners, the trunk glazed to the front and sides enclosing a silvered beat plaque, the panelled plinth veneered with well figured wood

Dial in good condition. Movement is complete but would benefit from a clean and fresh oil. Case in good clean condition, very minor old marks and scuffs. With Pendulum and jar of mercury, brass-cased oval weight, winder and case key.

James Condliff established his clockmaking business at 32 Gerard Street, Liverpool, in 1816. The industrial revolution enabled him to rapidly expand in further premises manufacturing almost every type of clock but he is particularly known for his very fine skeleton clocks and regulators. After James Condliff's retirement around 1862 the business was continued by other family members including Thomas and John, finally closing in 1923.

This regulator has a movement of exceptionally high quality and, together with the case, has survived in very original condition.
