Catalogue Note

Michael Powolny (1871-1954) was an Austrian sculptor, ceramicist, designer and teacher. Born in Judenburg he trained at Tonindustrie in Znaim, and then from 1894 to 1901 attended the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule. In 1906 with Bertold Löffler (1874-1960) he founded the Wiener Keramik workshop. A year later the Wiener Werkstätte took over the management of the sale and distribution of the products of the workshop. In 1913, the Wiener Keramik merged with the Gmundner Keramik to create the Vereinigte Wiener und Gmundner Keramik.
