Description

  • rosewood, amboyna, mahogany, walnut, maple
  • 77cm. high, 60cm. wide, 42.5cm. deep; 2ft. 6¼in. 1ft. 11½in., 1ft. 4¾in.
each with a crossbanded top in various timbers including satinwood, rosewood and amboyna, on slender turned legs joined by conforming stretchers, the smallest table with a chess board top and fitted with a frieze drawer with a bowed undertier

Condition

In good conserved condition and ready to place. Some of the tops with shrinkage to the veneers, though this doesn't detract.

Catalogue Note

A set of quartetto tables of this type is recorded at Leighton Hall, Lancashire, which is thought to have been supplied by Gillows circa 1810 and illustrated in R. Edwards & M. Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet Makers , rev. ed, London, 1955, p. 221, fig. 193. Leighton Hall was bought by Richard Gillow  from his cousin, Thomas Worswick in 1822.   A further nest of five tables of this model was sold Sotheby's, London, 20 November 2007, lot 193.
