Catalogue Note

The ciphers on the spyglass are somewhat confusing - each side has the correct royal crown over, respectively, the monograms of Louis XVII (King of France) and Charles Emmanuel III or IV (Kings of Sardinia). Louis XVII's cipher is flanked by those of his brother Louis Stanislas, comte de Provence (later Louis XVIII) and cousin, Louis Philippe (duc d'Orléans, later Louis Philippe, King of the French. That of Charles Emmanuel is flanked by those of Victor Amadeus and another, illegible monogram, possibly H or M/F, J or T.
