Description

de forme basse et ventrue, à décor finement sculpté d'une frise de masques taotie, flanqué d'anses découpées en têtes de dragon, reposant sur trois petits pieds surmontés de masques animaliers fantastiques, le couvercle bombé répétant le même décor et sculpté d'une prise en forme de fleur ajourée, socle en bois (3)

Acquired from Drouot, Paris, 19th and 20th February 1934, lot 76.

Condition

The censer has a ca. 10cm long natural vein/flaw running through the base and side that has been reinforced/stabilized with wax or glue. The the front part of one of the square end scrolls below one of the handles is broken off and missing. There is minor fritting to the raised parts of the design. On the cover there is a ca. 1cm wide shallow chip to one of the lotus petals of the knop. There is minor frtitting to the raised parts of the carving. The colour of both censer and cover is a darker tone than the catalogue illustration suggsts.
