En mai 1986, la Fondation Dapper ouvrait ses portes avec une exposition inaugurale consacrée aux Figures de reliquaire dites kota. "Un corpus d'une soixantaine d'objets de ce type a été réuni pour la première fois en un même lieu" (Paudrat, La voie des ancêtres, 1986, p. 4). Ce magistral panorama d'effigies mgulu ngulu des peuples dits "Kota" participa tant à la découverte des corpus stylistiques les plus rares, qu'à l'identification de leurs chefs-d’œuvre. S'imposait ainsi, dans l'ensemble réunissant les témoins "d'une variante Obamba et Wumbu de la haute vallée de l'Ogooué et des contrées congolaises voisines" (Perrois, Kota, 2001, p. 149), cette effigie, apothéose du style. A la conception cubiste des formes s'ajoutent la force incisive des traits et l'exceptionnel impact visuel, jouant sur la densité des contrastes chromatiques et des larges bandes obliques, uniques dans le corpus et signes de sa très grande ancienneté.
