Catalogue Note
Selon Michael Scott à propos d'un fronton collecté à Ugi en 1865 dont l'iconographie inclut des sculptures rapportées analogues : "Les hangars à pirogues tenaient lieu de points névralgiques reliant les pêcheurs aux puissantes entités dont dépendait l'apparition des nuées de bonites. Ils servaient d'abris aux pirogues sacrées utilisées pour la pêche des thonidés mais aussi à la cohorte de garçons se préparant à l'initiation. Aux yeux des pêcheurs, les images sur les hangars étaient autant de manifestations des entités qu'ils rencontraient en mer. Sculptées d'après des dessins communiqués en rêve par les esprits ou lors des séances de possession, ces images constituaient une actualisation de la présence sur terre des créatures marines" (in Mélandri, L'éclat des ombres.
