Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Consistent loss to the top of the headdress where was the charge initially. The proper right arm broken and glued. Fine nuanced patina.

Catalogue Note

A la force des traits et des volumes épannelés répond la puissance manifestée dans la pose telema lwinbanganga (adoptée par la noblesse Kongo et les devins en signe d'autorité absolue) et dans l'accumulation des charges protectrices bilongo. Présentes dans la coiffe et le collier, elles s'imposent dans l'impressionnant reliquaire ventral obturé par un miroir et ponctué, aux points cardinaux, par des tiges tubulaires. Voir Sotheby's (Paris, 30 novembre 2010, n° 22), pour une statuette de la collection de Havenon présentant un même - rare - dispositif ventral.
