Catalogue Note
Les boucliers de l'île d'Ukerewe (sud du lac Victoria), dont l'usage s'arrêta dans les années 1940, constituent le corpus le plus rare d'armes défensives du continent africain. Sculptés dans le bois léger d'ambach, ils se distinguent par la beauté de leur forme mouvementée et de leur décor pictural. Si tous offrent une gamme chromatique alternant des aplats blancs, noirs et rouges, la plupart présentent un décor de motifs triangulaires disposés en registres linéaires (cf. Phillips, Africa: The Art of a Continent, 1995, p. 159, pour l'exemplaire conservé au Museum für Völkerkunde de Vienne). Celui-ci se distingue par son très rare motif en zigzag, dont l'impact visuel est renforcé par le relief champlevé des aplats noirs.
