Dans les villages de la vallée du fleuve Sepik, "les masques de façade symbolisent le fait que chaque maison est une personne. La maison des hommes, comme la maison familiale, est le corps d'une femme dont la façade principale est son visage. [...] Les grands masques de façade se caractérisent par des yeux concentriques et un nez qui se prolonge exagérément au-dessus d'une grande bouche ouverte" (Peltier, Schindlbeck et Kaufmann, Sepik, Arts de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, 2015, p. 158).  Voir aussi Kelm (Kunst Vom Sepik, I, 1966, n° 381), pour un masque comparable dans les collections de l'Ethnologisches Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, collecté en 1928.
