Catalogue Note

Appelés rikenen ou triginin, les battoirs à feuilles de pandanus des îles Mashall étaient réalisés soit en bois, soit - beaucoup plus rarement - en coquille de bénitier géant ou en corail, comme ici. Si tous étaient utilisés dans le processus complexe de confection d'étoffes végétales, les battoirs en coquillage et en corail constituaient également des objets de prestige dont la possession était réservée aux femmes issues d'importantes familles. Ils étaient dès lors précieusement transmis par voie matrilinéaire, de génération en génération.  

A la beauté épurée de la forme, superbement exaltée dans les arts de Micronésie, s'ajoute, dans ce très rare battoir, la délicatesse des nuances chromatiques caractérisant le corail dur de Lobophyllia hemprichii
