Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture: Two holes on the head formerly used to fix the oister shell.

Catalogue Note

Ce siège servait, sur l'île de Nukuoro, à extraire la pulpe de noix de coco à l'aide d'une râpe en coquillage autrefois fixée sur la tête fuselée du quadrupède. Son esthétique minimaliste, associant formes fonctionnelles et parfaite pureté des lignes, est caractéristique de l'art - aussi rare que célèbre - des arts de l'île de Nukuoro, petit îlot situé à l'ouest des îles Carolines. Il se distingue par la très belle ampleur du mouvement de l'assise, et par le rare motif évidé en croix, du piétement. Voir Herreman, Holsbeke et Alphen (Etnografisch Museum Antwerpen, 1991, p. 61), pour un siège très comparable dans les collections du Museum Aan de Stroom.
