Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with its great age and use within the culture. A stabilized crack to the upper part of the proper hand side of the face. Some tiny loss to the rim of the beard. Fine nuanced patina.

Catalogue Note

Porté horizontalement sur le sommet de la tête, cet ancien masque Giwoyo était conçu pour être vu de profil, offrant ainsi, selon Olbrechts (Kongo Kunst, 1946, p. 34), "l'image impressionnante d'un masque funéraire". Son visage présente les traits classiques du style des Pende centraux, et en particulier de la chefferie du Katundu, où Emil Torday collecta, en 1909, les premiers masques Pende parvenus en Europe. 

Les masques Giwoyo, caractérisés par leur long appendice, sont les plus rares du corpus Pende, et celui-ci se distingue tant par le volume remarquable du visage, que par la qualité de la sculpture et par sa grande ancienneté. Voir Strother (Pende, 2008, n° 10) pour un masque comparable dans les collections du National Museum of African Art (Smithsonian Institution, Washington), représentant pour les Pende, selon l'auteur, "un défunt allongé sur son lit lors d'une veillée mortuaire".
