Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Proper left hand side of the mask broken and formerly fixed with rope and nails; probably glued as well. Minor marks, nicks and scratches consistent with use. Fine brown tone patina with shiny parts on edges, dusty in the hollows.

Catalogue Note

En 1948, Jan Vandenhoute choisissait, dans sa Classification stylistique du masque dan et guere de la Cote d'Ivoire occidentale (A.O.F.), un masque très comparable conservé au Reichsmuseums für Völkerkunde de Leiden (inv. n° 2699), afin d'illustrer le style des Dan méridionaux, et en particulier celui du village de Flanpleu. A la tension des lignes anguleuses et à l'expressionnisme des traits s'ajoutent ici, dans l'érosion et la patine profonde du bois dur, ainsi que dans les réparations indigènes, les signes de sa très grande ancienneté.
